About
History
The club was created in 2009 by Hayden Wilson after he had been training for many years after being “bitten by the grappling bug” from his brother, Stacey Wilson, 4th degree black belt and head instructor of Submission Factory in Perth back in early 2000’s. The club is run today and coached by original gym members, Bryan Russell and Forrest Goodwin who help shape a solid team of people with the help of the all star coaching team the club has.
You can catch all the team throughout the week on the mats, we continue to grow and bring instructors through training to grow the school.
Groundworx has been running for over 14 years now and is strong as ever with 8 black belts currently in the team, 6 active black belt coaches and a huge depth of knowledge across the entire combat sports platforms.
A great opportunity to learn from All Black belt coaches with extensive experience in competition, MMA and other martial arts, come down and join the team, become part of the Groundworx team.

Bryan Russell
Head Instructor / 1st Degree Black Belt
Over 35 years in martial arts training including 20 in karate and 15 years in Brazilian jiu jitsu training, trained all over the world and International refereeing experience in Australia and Ireland, dedicated to bringing a fun and informative training class for everyone.
Co owner with Forrest Goodwin, Bryan is committed to training both adults and kids with the same dedication and commitment to all.
Forrest Goodwin
Head Instructor / 1st Degree Black Belt
Forrest Goodwin. MMA champion, NZ National 2023 black belt jiu jitsu champion and all round wealth of knowledge in combat sports.
Forrest is a co owner with Bryan and they both drive a commitment to all classes, kids and adults, gi and nogi to share the knowledge in the art that they both know and continue to learn.
Catch Forrest in the gi Monday and Wednesday and running the nogi session on Thursday nights.
John Erskine
Instructor / 1st Degree Black Belt
Scotty Benson
Instructor / 2nd Degree Black Belt
Scotty is a pioneer in martial arts around NZ. He has held titles in kickboxing, Muay Thai and MMA as well as grappling awards and competition wins.
Scotty has a very strong grappling and wrestling game and is able to teach this very well. If you have wrestled against Scotty, you will know this and you need to get down and take a class with this man! Catch Scotty in the Tuesday clases with John!
Hayden Wilson
Club Founder/ Head black belt / 3rd Degree black belt
Club founder, Hayden is a 3rd degree black belt and can be found on the mats with the classes most nights of the week, still giving back to the sport that he loves!
Hayden has over 20 years experience in the sport, a current 2023 NZ National black belt champion and wealth of grappling knowledge and extensive and colourful competition experience and awards over the years.
